Jak psát souvětí: spojky a větné vazby

Správné používání although, however, despite a in spite of je klíčové. Každý má jinou vazbu, proto se snadno pletou.

Although × However × Despite × In spite of

Although – po although následuje celá věta.

Although it was raining, the exercise continued. (Ačkoli pršelo, cvičení pokračovalo.)

However – začíná novou větu, odděluj čárkou/středníkem.

It was raining; however, the exercise continued. (Pršelo; avšak cvičení pokračovalo.)

Despite – po despite stojí podstatné jméno nebo -ing tvar, ne věta.

Despite the rain, the exercise continued. (Navzdory dešti cvičení pokračovalo.)
Despite training hard, the team lost. (Přestože tvrdě trénovali, tým prohrál.)

In spite of – významově stejné jako despite, formálnější.

In spite of the bad weather, the exercise continued. (Navzdory špatnému počasí cvičení pokračovalo.)
Časté české chyby
  • Although of – tato vazba neexistuje. Správně: Although + věta.
    Although it was cold, they continued the mission. (Ačkoli byla zima, pokračovali v misi.)
  • Despite of – špatně, protože despite se s „of“ nepojí. Správně: Despite / In spite of.
    Despite the danger, they advanced. (Navzdory nebezpečí postupovali dál.)
  • Překlad „i když“ vždy jako when – when vyjadřuje čas, ne protiklad. Používej although / even though.
    Even though he was tired, he finished the report. (I když byl unavený, dokončil zprávu.)

Jak si to hlídat

  • although = věta • despite / in spite of = jméno nebo -ing • however = nová věta
  • Střídej výrazy, text bude bohatší a soudržnější.
  • Potřebuješ-li po despite větu, použij despite the fact that….
